This series of drawings evolved out of my explorations of the history and landscape of New Amsterdam. I spent the summer of 2014 traveling through the back streets, off the grid, and to familiar landmarks in lower Manhattan. From Chinatown to Wall Street and down to Coenties Slip, revisiting familiar sites and unearthing new ones. The visual beauty of the patina of the stone, brick, glass and steel and the many layers of history that lie beneath informed this series.
The materials used in these drawings, sumi ink, printing ink and gouache, evoke earth, stone, steel and reflection. Paper folds and ink blots function as structure and chance, creating a grid like structure along with organic forms suggesting evolution and decay.
